The Martinellis’ winemaking history dates back to
1637 and to the founder Antonius de’Martinellis. In 1717 his son,
Joannes Simon, moves with his 18 children from the region of the
Southern Lake of Garda to Trentino; by the end of the century the family
owns its first vineyards in the neighborhood called “della Chizzolla”.
It is however only around the mid of 1800s that they start producing and
selling their own wines; in that period they build two establishments:
one in Rovereto where they sell the wine and the other in Chizzola where
the winemaking process actually takes place.
Nowadays Albino and Eleonora renew this century-old love for wine. The
winery and its vineyards occupy an area of approximately six hectares
(14.826 acres). Vines are grown according to two different methods: the
pergola –typical of this region (pergola trentina)– is chosen for
varieties like Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Marzemino, which,
by means of meticulous pruning, adequate stripping of foliage and
thinning of grapes, produce excellent wines. On the contrary, a guyot
style has been preferred for Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and
Merlot in order to reduce yields per hectare and per plant. This has
proven the right choice: the first vintage, the 1997 Trentino Cabernet
Sauvignon Rosso, after resting in oak barrels, has met remarkable
success.
